Hatbox Ghost

I'm happy they kept this fella around for the Haunted Mansion Holiday makeover this year. And I also wish they would stop doing the Haunted Mansion Holiday makeover.

The Shankill Butchers

It's November which means its Decemberists Month (oddly) and I finally took the plunge and did an illustration of the Shankill Butchers that I've been meaning to do for ages. This is also a foray into a very different kind of watercolour painting and I'm encouraged that I think it went fairly ok! For a first real kick at the can anyways.

November Yeti

Been working on Hallowe'en stuff for.... well let's be fair and say 11 months. On a fantasy kick now so that means orangutan yeti monster apparently.

Porko the Fat Orko

So we were playing an RPG a few months ago set in the Masters of the Universe universe (so fun...) and my good friend Sean Gillen was a character named Porko the Fat Orko who was so fat he could only sorta glide along the ground rather than float like his fellow Trollans. For his Birthday I did him a quick drawing of Porko and tonight I coloured it and gave it a sorta ripped-off Scottie Young/Bill the Cat look. But not as good.

Stingy Jack

Playing around with my pen again and doing some thinking on a presentation for Abracadaver this year themed around Jack-O-Lanterns. So rather than working on that I drew circles in pen for an hour or so.
Also I will be continuing this blog but also running a tumblr in an attempt to "get with the times."

You can follow that if it's more convenient at seancovernton.tumblr.com.

Cheers!

On the Road

I just got back from Revelstoke and spent some time scanning drawings that have been hiding in my sketchbook.

Beheaded

I have about a million things to do in the next few weeks but this doodle has been staring at me from the doodle pile for weeks so I gave'er a bit of flash shading and my standard "Slap a texture on it and call it a day" treatment. Now onto other stuff!

No Hands Lunch Doodle

I have this fear of not drawing hands because of art teachers saying "I see you're avoiding drawing hands." So at lunch I'm doodling this thing and I think "Damn I should show the hands. better put 'em in." This has become a willful act of restraint from proving myself to the ghosts of art teachers past. I think it looks cool this way.

But the next drawing will probably have hands just in case I get marks deducted. In life.

Remember: You are your own worst enemy

I don't draw machines well. At all. So I figured "I'm gonna draw a dirt bike! With reference! BUT I'll also make it an upshot with pushed perspective!" Which was stupid. I hate that I had to cheat and warp the rough drawing to get the perspective I wanted. Cheaty cheaty cheaty! But I'm happy that the drawing came out ok. And it's based on a photo of a friend of mine from Winnipeg so it's fun that it sorta looks like quasi-anime-him. Anyways... here's sort of a dirtbike. Complete eith "engine."
Also here is an alien alligator bounty hunter talking to the chicken from Monkey Island but with rockets.

Holy Dyna. Dirk again.

I liked the drawing so I started colouring it. Then it got progressively more complicated until Kyle Balluff helped me save it from a grisly recycling bin death. Thanks Kyle!

5 Second Day Nightmare Butler Thing!

Well I finally got around to youtubing my 5 Second Day animation. Nothing as long as last year's but the goal here was to try to do fuller animation using the pen tool and keeping a really loose drawing. Ben Templesmith loose where it feels more like a pen gesture that a fully refined illustration. So I kinda threw model and volume out the window trying really hard to stick to my initial sketches. Which is a style with its difficulties to be sure. Not the least of which is hand-colouring everything since you can't click-fill. Shudder!

Also I have NO idea why the colour is all blown-out in the thumbnail. Catch up with me, Youtube!

Anyways... enjoy!

Some old colour stuff and new pencil stuff

I was away from blogging with any semblance of regularity for quite a while. I did these quick colour things a while back for a project I wanted to start doing that didn't go anywhere. I learned a lot about character development doing it which was great though. And on top of that here's some new sketches. I hate my scanner. That scribbley pirate lost a lot in translation.

Also I have noticed that Dirk the Daring is rapidly becoming my "default person" to draw when I'm being kind of aimless. And his model changes to be more or less whatever the random humanoid I was doodling had. So I guess I should say that Dirk is the costume I slap on whatever I'm drawing while watching movies.

More Dirk

Playing around again. I don't normally try to do tonal renders traditionally because they frighten me and ruin drawings. But ... omlettes and eggs and so forth I suppose. Also my perspective isn't the hottest.

Sketchy

Well I've had a lovely weekend doing virtually nothing but some light errands, cartoon watching and playing around with markers and pencils. It was good to not be near the monitor for a while doing these. *relaxed sigh*

RELEASE THE SATURATION!

I did two sketches of this and there's definitely something I lost from the very first drawing and then obliterated further in the painting. I think it's probably all the lumpiness whereas the original sketch was a slightly more graphic/streamlined sort of design. Also I was trying to make a real point out of not achieving the colours through using layers and layers of meters and overlays but in the end it had to be done to save it.

Also I should have spent more time with the composition to make the scenario clearer. But... you know, live and learn. Oh hmm. The position of that femur was also way better flipped.

Least Original Design Ever

So I took on this notion that I wanted to design a really cool looking axeman. An executioner that was unlike anything I'd seen before. About 400 executioners later I liked this drawing best. There were three-eyed fishheaded executioners, goblin executioners, executioners that looked like they were made out of taffy... I wanted him to look slow and lanky but heavy. The drawings pretty much universally sucked so I went with the least original possible look. But I really like how the bright green turned out. It was a complete accident. That was meant to be a shadow layer that I turned to "overlay" and suddenly the colours were popping after hours of them looking muddy and awful.

Moar Saturation. Now with Vampires!… Well Vampire.

Man I'm really on a cartoon kick lately! Been studying and doing drawings from Braindead 13 and Dragon's Lair and lamenting that Dragon's Lair was never made into a film. I love Don Bluth's designs.

Fighting saturation

I'm complete rubbish at colour. I know. Which is why I'm fighing to learn me some colour but I refuse to paint piles of fruit. So I'm playing around with trying to make things as high in saturation as possible. WHich goes against every living fibre of my being.

So this is a lunchtime sketch-turned colour attempt.
