"speed" painting

Originally it was done in under 60 minutes but then I noodled and doodled it for another hour and a half. Not sure if I like it with or without the little man. I'm kind of happy that this area is slightly less oppressive than usual. Watched Laputa on the weekend and I have it in my head that I'm going to take another run soonish at a happycloud speedpainting.

**EDIT** I forgot my favorite trick! It does... something different than expected. Adding scanned textures behinds takes away from of the telltale photoshop brushiness and makes everything murkier... normally more of the texture comes through but I guess it works better on less rendered stuff. Live and learn.

Heee, cool! I like the version with the little man, it gives more of a sense of scale.

I also think that the human figure is needed to help us place ourselves in the picture and be daunted by the setting. I think, however, that the bottom version is murky almost to the point of unintelligibility. The middle version has just the right amount of murk.

i like the middle one the best where you can still see all the texture on the tree root up close, reminds me of an octopus tentacle, in a good way :), but in any case the scene definitely has mood and feeling, gj dude

Nice stuff: the texture things a good idea...

Having said that, I agree with Gushu that the middle is the most readable: the extra highlight helps to see the little guy better.

personally i think the brush sizes you used were inappropriate. If you had used a brush size that was about .4 sizes bigger I would have liked this.

Alas, the resize-brush button is stuck down with a wad of hubba bubba.
