November "holiday"

Hey everybody! I'm still here! I'm unemployed for the moment (new contract starting in December) so I decided to take November as something of a vacation. And three days into that I got bored and started a bunch of new projects. So here's some drawings from the costume lifedrawing, some library people drawings and other assorted doodles. The kid walking through the snow was a quickie that kind of expanded into sort of a new big-ish project. More on that in future posts. But for the record that's where it started at 5:00 in the morning a couple weeks ago.
The coloured thing is my rendition of Ulmo from The Silmarillion. I meant it to be a companion piece to the Morgoth illustration I did... heck I guess a year and a half ago now. Not sure if I like it as much as Morgoth but oh well. It's better than my first attempt. I'm having a real problem making ulmo look.... watery... like there's a sense of depth to the body of water. That's a hard thing to abstract as it turns out. I guess I should have tried some little colour studies before I launched into the full thing. Live and learn I suppose.

Your "story" gestures are getting so nice. The water spirit guy look like a water spirit because of the context of the shot. If it was meant to be a more photo-realistic render, one could say that the water itself doesn't necesarilly feel like water, but I have no idea how you could have changed it if you wanted to keep the nice, graphic look of the shot. Great stuff all around.

"If I hear you sing 'Catch a Wave' one more time I'll smack you all the way back to Duluth!!"

It's hard to make water look translucent, especially when it's standing upright. Maybe it would help to think of his nibs as made of glass or ice?

LOL Gushulak! Well played sir.

As it turns out I seem to have saved only a flattened version of the PSD of Ulmo so I can only do superficial tinkering in future revisions unless I feel like reverse engineering all the layers to remember what it was I did there. Oh well =)

Good Stuff Sean! I like visiting your blog because you update regularly...unlike SOME people we know.
I linked you to my blog too so more people can see your stuff!

ULMO has a lot of movement and drama, which i think overshadows any lack of 'watery-ness'.
...and, who's the red woman with the skull skirt?

haha... she's the model from Burlesque Life Drawing. She was great. It was refreshing to go to life drawing with a model who had so much personality!
